Campus Opportunities

SCA is a nationwide force of conservation volunteers that helps thousands of people answer the call of conservation every year.  Sponsored by American Eagle Outfitters, high school conservation crews of 6-8 students, aged 15-19, with two trained adult leaders will serve the environment through work in parks and forests and gain hands-on conservation and outdoor skills, with camping equipment and meals provided.  The tuition free program includes an outdoor adventure trip after the project.  Go to www.thesca.org for more information, or contact Jane Boren at jboren@rocketmail.com.

Mid-America Christian University is hosting a FREE college preview weekend on April 15th-17th.  This weekend is called MACU MASH.  It begins Thursday, April 16th at 6:00p.m. and ends Saturday morning and 10 a.m.  All high school freshmen through graduating seniors are invited.  Register today and get all the scoop on this can’t miss event at www.macu.edu

Sylvan Learning Center is giving a FREE practice ACT on March 27th at 9:30 and April 24th

Sylvan Learning Center K-8 level students can go to www.bookadventure.com.  This website allows them to print off book lists, go to the library, read the book, and get back on the computer to take the assessment.  The students are eligible for points and prizes.

FREE TUTORING at the Norman Public Library on any subject, Tuesday Tutors from 6:30-8p.m. for grades 6-12 with OU students through Crossroads Youth & Family Services.  Call 701-2620 for more information.  Students may drop in or call to see if there is a tutor available in a specialized subject.

FAFSA4caster is an online tool that helps students and parents determine their current eligibility for federal student aid. Parents and students check out www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov to learn how much aid you would receive if you applied today.

American Legion Boys’ State and Girls’ State.  If you’re up for the challenge, they’ll give you a week that will shape your lifetime.  For more information go to www.boysandgirlsstate.org.

www.college.gov was designed by students for students and features first-person accounts of students who overcame challenges to going to college such as peer pressure, lack of family support, and financial barriers.  It provides relevant, comprehensive information about why to go, how to go, and how to pay for college o other postsecondary education programs.  Young people who may not have considered high education a viable option will be engaged, informed, and inspired to create their own “roadmap” to college.

Need a Lift – The American Legion 152-page book lists scholarships, grants and loans for which students may qualify.  These are available at www.needalift.org, or you order a book for $4.95. 

NCAA Clearinghouse – Any student athlete desiring to play NCAA Division I or Division II sports in college, will need to register through the NCAA Clearinghouse at the beginning of their senior year.  To register, go to www.eligibilitycenter.org.  Print two copies for Mrs. Stephens to submit, as well.  NEW INFORMATION - All SAT and ACT scores must be reported directly to the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse by the testing agency.  Test scores that appear on transcripts will no longer be used.  When registering for the SAT or ACT, use the clearinghouse code of 9999 to make sure the score is reported to the clearinghouse. 

OKCIS - Seniors remember OKCIS offers information on any US College or University, Occupations, Career Quest Tips, Job Searchs, Financial Aid - Scholarships, Grants, etc., Military opportunities and much more. Develop your own portfolio and Plan of Study. You begin by logging on at www.okcis.intocareers.org, the user name is communitychristian and password of okcis177. You each have your own user name (usually first initial and last name) and password (communitychristian1)after that. If you forgot yours, come see Mrs. Stephens.

Individual college visits are for seniors only as stated in the handbook. Permission forms are located on the wall by Lanette’s desk or in Mrs. Stephens’ office.  These must be signed by a parent and returned to Mrs. Stephens for approval, one week ahead.  When approved, you may pick up an absentee form from Lanette to get your work.

Transcript order forms have been placed in the holder by Lanette's desk. These must be filled out and turned in to Mrs. Stephens to receive a transcript. The first three are free, thereafter $1.00 each.

Males: Within 30 days of your 18th birthday, you must register with the Selective Service System. See Mrs. Stephens to register or go to www.sss.gov.  It's the law.

ACT/SAT Review Classes

ACT Online Prep Classes are available at www.actstudent.org for $19.95.

ACT Preparation Course given by Dr. Chesley, Mr. Newman, and Mr. Askey will be held at the University of Oklahoma the Saturday before each ACT National Test Date.  Class is from 9a.m. to 4p.m.  Cost is $90.  Registration forms may be picked up from the High School Advisor’s Office or Lanette’s desk or registration may be done online at http://youth.ou.edu.  Registration deadline is the Tuesday before the course beings.  Enrollment after the deadline is possible if classroom space is available.  A confirmation of enrollment will be sent to each student registered prior to deadline.

All students who have taken the PSAT receive My College QuickStart, a free online personalized college and career planning kit, with access until they have graduated from high school.  Students have the opportunity to take the next steps toward college with these features: 

            *My Online Score Report, including all test questions and complete answer explanations, projected SAT score ranges, and state percentiles

About PSAT / NMSQT: The Preliminary SAT®/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a co-sponsored program by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test™. KOHL’S KIDS WHO CARE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – Nominees are divided into two age groups:  ages 6-12 and 13-18.  Nominees must meet the following criteria:  actions must be described in detail and should document efforts above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age, volunteer efforts must have occurred in the last year, winners are chosen based on the project, benefits and outcome, and applicants must not have graduated high school as of March 15, 2010.  Moore then 2,100 nominees will be awarded with more than $410,000 in scholarships and prizes ranging from $50 Kohl’s Gift Cards, 200 - $1,000 scholarships, or ten - $10,000 scholarships.  Visit www.kohlskids.com for official rules and to nominate a deserving young volunteer.  Nominations accepted February 1 – March 15, 2010.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – Harvard Univ. announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition.  If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard Univ. wants to pay the tuition.  To find out more about Harvard offering free tuition for families making less than $60,000 a year, visit Harvard’s financial aid website at:  http://www.fao.fas.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do or call the school’s financial aid office at (617) 495-1581.

ACT/SAT  Testing Schedules

ACT ASSESSMENT AND ACT ASSESSMENT PLUS WRITING: Choose either of two test options - The ACT Assessment or the ACT Assessment Plus Writing, which includes a 30 minutes Writing Test. Not all colleges and universities require a Writing Test. Check with the colleges you are considering-or go to www.actstudent.org for a list of institutions that require or recommend the Writing Test.
